Electric cars begin to be shared in São Paulo

The logic of shared cars is the same as that of bicycles that run through São Paulo. The customer picks up the vehicle at one point, makes the journey and leaves it at another location, released for the next user. The service begins to develop in the country, with a focus on electric cars.

"We will have a model for short journeys, with cars like the BMW i3 and the Smart, both electric", says businessman Leonardo Domingos, of the LDS Group, which launches this Sunday (9) the sharing service in São Paulo, called Urbano LDSharing .

The system is “free floating”. It means that the cars will be spread over areas ("home zones") in the city, and can be used spontaneously, being returned to the points of the operational area, carried out in partnership with a French technology company.

The user will find the vehicle at the nearest location and return the same. There are no specific points, but areas (within a neighborhood, a block).

Green Minority

Due to the limited supply, only 15 cars in the initial fleet of 60 are electric. By September this year there will be 80 in total, among them, 60% electric, according to Domingos. "We wanted to have 100% of the fleet made up of 'green' vehicles," he says.

He tries to make it possible to import other models, and among these is the new Smart - the ones available today were produced in 2015.

By the end of 2018, the company expects to have 300 vehicles, with 50% non-polluting.

“The idea is that the car will be used for short races. If it is running all day, the tariff will be high ”, explains the businessman. Each 20 minutes will cost R $ 29. There are different tariffs per use.

The model adopted in São Paulo is similar to the one created in Fortaleza by the Vamo project (Alternative Mobility Vehicles), which has been operating since the end of 2016.

In the capital of Ceará there are 20 electric cars, with two or five seats, and about 2,000 users -39% are between 21 and 30 years old.

“I have already used Vamo vehicles from Monday to Friday, they serve well when traveling through the urban center. The five-seater cars offer more comfort, performance and a greater sense of security ”, says student Daniel Castelo, 21.

The Fortaleza project cost the sponsor R $ 7 million, the Hapvida Saúde group, which works in partnership with the city government. The maintenance of cars of Chinese origin is carried out by the company Serttel.

There are charging stations where the user picks up and returns the car. You must register in the program and wait for the registration to be accepted.

The customer signs a term of responsibility and then schedules a test with a technician to get to know the vehicles, whose first half hour of use costs R $ 20.

In São Paulo, Domingos continues to look for partners to expand the share of trams. The businessman plans to invest R $ 25 million by the end of 2017.

“We want to place four cars per square kilometer, so that the customer does not have to walk more than 250 meters to reach the vehicle. In the future, after creating the culture of using the service, we expect to have between 5,000 and 10,000 vehicles. ”

Initially, there will be 15 home zones in São Paulo, located in Jardim Europa, Vila Olímpia, Vila Nova Conceição and Itaim Bibi. Then, Moema and the Berrini region. Four expansion stages are planned.

The cleaning of the vehicles will be done by mobile teams, at the stopping points.

The expansion of non-polluting options depends on the automakers. They invest in sharing in Europe and the USA and are studying to adopt the model here, but the arrival of fleets powered by electricity is a distant reality.

“Our intention is to quickly develop new mobility strategies, and we want to bring our sharing system to Brazil. But starting with electric cars would complicate the project, ”says Pablo Averame, vice president of marketing and mobility for PSA Peugeot Citroën in Latin America.

He refers to the Free2Move application, which manages sharing services. The strategy seeks to transform the company into a “mobility provider”, a concept that is on the rise in times of change in the industry.

In Europe, the service is driven by electric cars. In Brazil, there are no plans - no recharging network or law to make imports or production of these vehicles viable.
